Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) is hiring a Prague-based Director, News Products to join our newly established Innovation & Audience Engagement division heading a team of journalists and leading the strategic planning, development, and execution of all news products within the organization. This includes identifying new product opportunities, developing roadmaps and working with cross-functional teams to bring new offerings to the market.
You will advise on the use of formats, features, tools and tactics – informed by data and ruled by editorial priorities – to increase the number of users, their level of engagement, and their propensity to return to RFE/RL as their reliable source of news.
This job is a good match for you if you have user empathy, an audience-centric mindset, a strong knowledge of digital news production & distribution and experience in mentoring and training journalists.
Working in a non-profit organization and helping our story to reach audiences more efficiently, you will contribute to RFE/RL’s mission – spreading unbiased news where independent media are banned by the government or not yet established.
What does the role entail?
Among other responsibilities you will:Develop, execute and assess the unique digital products of RFE/RL’s News Services
Propose, prototype, launch, adapt and assess processes to reach and build relationships with audiences
Lead and guide cross-functional project teams, manage the News Products team
Assist and mentor journalists to help advance the Services’ impact on all platforms
Monitor the news media industry for innovative approaches to products, platforms and processes and implement them
Collaborate with colleagues on training (changes in the digital media landscape, tools, best practices)
Manage product budget
The successful candidate is expected to have:
Advanced (graduate) degree or equivalent experienceIdeally 7+ years of experience in digital journalism and 3+ years in product management, incl. roadmaps and acting in consensus-facilitating roles
Expertise with best practices, rules, and industry standards in agile product management
Experience with successful launches of news products
Strong project management, leadership, communication and presentation skills
Proficiency in English (other relevant – broadcast region – languages preferred)
